The bible tells us that when we accept God into our lives we enter the battle field, my question is: How can christians build up their strength and endurance for the spiritual battles that lie ahead?

Good question... The Bible makes is pure and simple.
In Ephesians 6:10-20, Paul tells us what we need to prepare for battle.... Instead of going into details, I'll sum it up... The gear we need are:
Belt of Truth = Eph 6:14
Breastplate of Righteousness = Eph 6:14
Feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the Gospel of Peace = Eph 6:15
Shield of Faith = Eph 6:16
Helmet of Salvation = Eph 6:17
Sword of the Spirit (Word of God) = Eph 6:17
I hope I didn't miss any... In every battle or war, from David's time to NOW in Iraq, we can see that everyone gears up to go to battle. Spiritually, it's the same. We cannot go into battle with no gear, and if we don't have these gears, we are not even Christians... Right, shredder? Any comments? :p:

These are nice metaphors, but they offer no practical advice. Unfortunately, there is no manual that will teach one how to prepare for such battles.

Yah, but like yacko said, these are all nice metaphores. I believe when paul was writing this, he was probably in jail, overlooking a soldier. He saw their gear and decided to write/add a metaphorical speech into his letter to the church of ephesus.
"we're like soldiers..."
Paul tries to explain. So he uses the soldier armor to explain how. But, how do we use a breast plate of righteousness? I think, if we figure out what exactly the armor is when not speaking metaphorically, we'd have a better understanding of how to equip ourselves.
