Hi all. I have just started to read the Bible all the way through. I thought I might find in dull...but instead I am so intrigued and have so many questions. I have been a Christian for a long time now but never thought to ask these things...

1. In Exodus God gives his commandments and laws to Moses. In them He goes into great detail about how they were to treat slaves. Is this God condoning slavery? Wow that totally rocked me.

2. Also in the Old Testament men were allowed to have many wives and even take slaves as wives...when in the Bible did that change. Did the Roman influence in the New Testament change that or did God speak about this later on in the Old Testament?

The more I read the more I want to know.

You should also note that a lot of the Mosaic law was written by Moses to appease the Patriarchal Jews. Jesus even said that the laws of divorce were made out of ther hardened hearts.

Maybe we have false ideas about what slavery was really like. The life of a slave was not easy, but its an exaggerated idea of the hardships of slavery from movies or reading history. But most cases the life of a slave was not much different from the life of any lower-class worker. And if one is a law abiding citizen, and by law I mean Gods law... even applied today ... we are commanded to 'love' and treat people out of love. And no matter a persons situation, we are free through Christ

Were you a slave when you were called? Do not let that trouble you; but even if a chance of liberty should come, choose rather to make good use of your servitude 1 Corinthians 7:21

Also, in the O.T. there is lots concerning slavery, and how God punished people into exile and banned them into slavery, u have to realize how much patience God did have, but eventually punished some of these ppl, (who I think deserved a much more harsh treatment) But he always redeemed His people. Not saying some ppl deserved to be slaves in recent history, but on the topic of the O.T
