check out this little paragraph i found at the romanian consulate of michigan.... you can click on the link at the bottom to read the entire article:
Historically, Detroit was considered to comprise the largest concentration of Romanians, but no longer holds the position due to the increase in immigration to the New York City and Southern California areas in the past decade. We can approximate that the number of Romanian-American in Michigan is somewhere between 40,000-60,000.
Currently, the community supports nineteen ethnic churches in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, with their corresponding religious, education and parish auxiliaries, five Union & League fraternal lodges affiliated in a central association, an AMVETS Veteran Post, athletic teams, and a number of folklore and folk dance assembles.
Michigan is the headquarters of both Romanian Orthodox dioceses of North America, and is the location of a Romanian Orthodox Monastery for women in Rives Junction. The Romanian-American Heritage Center, the unique repository of documentation related to Romanian immigration to North America, was founded in 1975, and is located in Grass-Lake. The \"Solia\", \"Credinta\", and \"Information Bulletin\" of the Heritage Center, and also \"Lumea Romaneasca\", periodicals with national and international circulation, are published in the state, and Romanian Radio Language program \"Romanian Hour\" are well known in the Romanian Community.

according to the 2002 Study of Romanian-Americans... 21% of romanians live in New York ... and has anyone heard of a powerful church in New York? i haven\'t... back in 1993 we went on a mission trip with the youth from our newly formed church (Betezda) .... back then the churches we visited were small and seemed to be lacking youth and \'life\' ... now, i heard that the chuches are even smaller....
i wonder about an idea to begin ministering and reaching out to the 21% (the largest percantage of romanians in america) and begin planting and strengthening churches and youth there...
:saint1:
has anyone else thought about this?
that would be an amazing idea, cosmin! but the problem is how do you get there every Sunday or even more.. The only hope would be to appoint a romanian missionary in the city.. Maybe that will work out.... God knows.... but we should still pray cause God can make the seemingly impossible possible....
Maybe with the war more people will search God, especially the romanians who at least have an idea of the One and true God from being orthodox.. I\'m sure God can make a trezire in New York too...

anyway:
that would be an amazing idea, cosmin! but the problem is how do you get there every Sunday or even more.. The only hope would be to appoint a romanian missionary in the city..
me and fr. simi were actually talking about New York a couple of weeks ago... he mentioned that when he first came to the states he wanted to go and be a missionary there because he saw the need back then.... (around 1994) .... so, who know... our youth convention theme is \"Youth with a Mission\" .... so who knows.... perhaps if it is a divine idea, something will happen.

except michigan izn\'t a city, but i think Michigan is the state with the most romanians.....
New York does have the most...about 250,000 romos....thats what our pastor said when he visited a few months ago.
However, I think the Metro Detroit area has the most romos in proportion to population. You see, because while socali might have a few more and chicago too, the population of these areas and cities is a lot greater than Detroit\'s population which is only around 1.5 mil...

it\'s so interesting to see how many romos there are in the U.S. I remember awhile ago, around the time Bush became president, this guy who was running for ambassador to Romania, was saying that there is an estimated one million Romanians in the United States!
Agapeme10
04-22-2003, 02:24 PM
I think Springfield Missouri :laf: has the most Romanians :P. j/k probably one of the least.
I think Cali, Mich., AZ, Chicago - that are Christians, but when they did the census they found that New York had the most Romanians yet they have one of the smallest churches. Most are Orthodox.

Nah Detroit used to have the largest & oldest Romanian community in the U.S.
And did u guys know Romanians date back as far as the civil war in America, there where actually Romanians that died in that war. First Romanians where mainly from the Banat & Transylvania region of Romania, because this part was more advanced and under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There where even Romanian soccer teams in N.Y leagues back in the early 1900's.
Here i actually found some info
"The first Romanian recorded in America was Father Samuil Damian, a Romanian Orthodox priest from Transylvania who travelled in Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia in 1748 and corresponded with Benjamin Franklin regarding electricity, before settling in Charleston, South Carolina."
1748 the First Romo in America..
"During the American Civil War, several Romanians fought valiently on the Union side. George Pomutz, 15th Iowa Regiment, was elevated to the rank of Brigadier General and captain Nicholas Dunca, 18th Volunteers of New York was killed in action at the Battle of Cross Keys, Virginia. Seaman Constantin Theodorescu was killed while serving aboard the battleship "Maine" when it sunk in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898."
"A gradual immigration of Romanians commenced in 1880 and increased at the turn of the twentieth century, totaling a hundred thouand by the beginning of World War I. The majority of immigrants came from Transylvania, Banat, and Bucovina, territories under Austro-Hungarian rule, where political ethnic and religious persecution, combined with precarious social and economic conditions, forced Romanians to leave their homes in search of relief in the new world. Spread throughout the continent, the highest concentrations were in New York, New Jersey, and the cities of the Midwest, where the immigrants found employment in the factories, the mines and on the railroads."
"Over 15,000 Romanians served in the American and Canadian Armies during both world wars, in Korea and Vietnam, where hundreds died and many distinguished themselves in battle."
The most Romanians live in California, here are the numbers
1. California- 56,789
2. New York- 51,380
3. Florida- 28,521
4. Michigan- 26, 857
5. Ohio- 26,017
and total number of Romanians living in America is around 400,000!Some ppl do say over a 1million Romanians live in America, but many may of integrated or lost ties with their mother land.
I dunno, but im crazy over knowing Romanian information, and NO i did not make these numbers up. Hope it answers ur question.

I dunno if thats entirly true, maybe, im only saying that because my great grandfather did sail to the U.S and back in the early 1900s, and my father told me he'd bring back stuff to Romania even in those times, and because it was easy to leave back then. And well if that would happen then why would he return, and my family didnt really have any complaints under the Hungarian regieme(no im not Ungur). And i also heard of Indian American's migrating to the north of Serbia which was under Austro-Hungary Empire too, which is kinda weird seeing Indian American going to Serbia back in those times.

One thing i dont get, how come there are more Romanians then Serbians and Croatians in America???because the Former Yugoslav ppl where allowed to leave their country while Romanians where closed up by communism. Here in Australia there are only 15,000 Romanians all up for a population of 20million ppl. Yet there are over 100,000 Serbz here almost equalling the amount there is in America. Croatians again there are over 100,000, and the tiny country of Macedonia has over 70,000 Maco's living in Aust. We Romanians are a rare species here in Aust compared to many of our neighbouring European countries, but i see that in the U.S its not like that. I really dont get how many Romanians ended up being in America, unless ofcourse the majority migrated before WW2.

Polls don't mean anything... they are probably based on legal Romanians.. but we obviously know there is quite a big number that are illegal..
Chicago has Romanians all over the city an suburbs.. especially Lincolnwood.. i think half of that is ROmanian :D we're not like the Polish or Italians.. that kind of have their own neighborhoods.. that would be interesting. But everywhere i lived in Chicago i knew Romanians that lived close by.

The most romos are def in nyc. Why do you think they have the biggest Romania independence day parade in the middle of new york city?? There are almost 200 thousand Romanians in new york city. The parade is full of romos.
