Purpose Driven Gimmicks

I am writing this tract primarily in response to the immensely popular book by Rick Warren entitled The Purpose Driven Life. These last of the last days that we are living in are a very strange time indeed. We watch in amazement as nominal “Christian” religions are rotting from within while our entire nation wallows evermore in perverseness and immorality. Fundamental “Christian” churches are especially vulnerable as they try to meet the world halfway. Satan knows that in this late hour there is only a small remnant left, and he keeps busy providing clever gimmicks that are so cleverly created that if it were possible, even the very elect would be deceived. We have seen the rise of the “Promise Keepers”, which is a Masonic project, and I have evidence of that. We have seen the “Passion of the Christ”, which was a Vatican-Jesuit project. Many other things have emerged.

There are many satanic gimmicks, which deceptively present only part of the truth, and they are always bestsellers, because Satan knows that undiscerning people always gravitate toward evil. It is spiritual fast food and junk food that people clamor for in search of gimmicks that compensate for their lack of true repentance. The Purpose Driven Life book by Rick Warren is one such masterpiece of deception!

Rick Warren is the pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California. The church grounds and complex is designed like a theme park and has a budget of 90 million dollars per year. The church features psychedelic rock concerts with music that would rival Jimi Hendrix, “K.I.S.S.”, and the “Grateful Dead.” In fact, Rick Warren admitted that one of his dreams was to become a rock star. In an interview for network television, Rick Warren freely admitted that he never preaches against homosexuality or abortion. He stated that he believes abortion is wrong, but he would never say it from the pulpit. Warren considers himself to be a marketer, salesman, and preacher. He says that we must always accentuate the positive and that worship should be fun. Rick Warren has been known to rub elbows with high-level politicians, such as President George W. Bush, and has become a multi-millionaire through his various efforts and enterprises. The Purpose Driven Life book has sold 20 million copies generating $400 million in sales. He also teaches his thousands of church members to give ten percent of their gross income.

We will now look at the book itself and see what is wrong with this project of deception that has affected so many. We will start with the title: The Purpose Driven Life. I am reminded of Luke 4:1 which says, “And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.” As we can see, the Spirit of God does not “drive” us, and we are not “driven” in His purpose. Who is the one who causes people to be driven? In Luke 8:29 we read, “For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was DRIVEN of the devil into the wilderness.”
When one reads Warren’s Purpose Driven Life book, it would seem innocuous enough, for it contains what appears to be good practical advice. It will be noticed by discerning Christians, however, that there are dangerous errors and new age philosophies interspersed in the book, like raisins in a cake. Before I give some examples of these errors, I must also point out that Mr. Warren does not seem to like the Authorized King James Bible, and you will be hard-pressed to find a verse from the KJV in his book. His book contains 1200 verses from 15 versions. On page 325 of his book Warren says, “First, no matter how wonderful a translation is, it has limitations.” In other words, he is saying there is no one true Word of God! What rank blasphemy! What brazen treason to God’s Kingdom! God only wrote one book and promised to preserve it. The Authorized King James Bible is the only true Word of God in the English language, period. Warren also said on page 325, “English-speaking people should thank God that we have so many different versions to use for devotional reading.” Mr. Warren, they all say different things! God is not the author of confusion!

Here are a few more things that Rick Warren has to say. Page 63: “The moment you were born into the world, God was there as an unseen witness, smiling at your birth.” How about Hitler and Stalin, Mr. Warren? On page 104 we read, “Try praising God without using the words ‘praise, hallelujah, thanks, or amen.’” He says to substitute other words. Why eliminate those precious Bible words that Satan hates so much? Try to tell that to the Apostle Paul and the early Christians. On page 160 we find the new-age unity theme as Warren writes, “Unity in the church is so important that the New Testament gives more attention to it than either heaven or hell.” And on page 167 we read, “At Saddleback Church, every member signs a covenant that includes a promise to protect the unity of our fellowship….. When God has a bunch of baby believers he wants to deliver, he looks for the warmest incubator church he can find.” It should be so obvious that the greatest of Christians came forth in great adversity. We don’t need warm, fuzzy incubators.

On page 181, we find Warren using an analogy that every Freemason would recognize as pure Masonic doctrine regarding alignment with the “sacred East.” Warren writes, “Imagine riding in a speedboat on a lake with an automatic pilot set to go east. If you decide to reverse and head west, you have two possible ways to change the direction. One way is to grab the steering wheel and physically force it to head in the opposite direction from where the autopilot is programmed to go. By sheer willpower you could overcome the autopilot, but you would feel constant resistance. Your arms would eventually tire of the stress, you’d let go of the steering wheel, and the boat would instantly head back east, the way it was internally programmed.”

On page 267, Warren says, “God uses money to test your faithfulness as a servant. That is why Jesus talked more about money than he did about either heaven or hell.” Positively false! Warren also believes we can alter the appointed day of our Lord’s return. On page 286 he says, “If you want Jesus to come back sooner, focus on fulfilling your mission, not figuring out prophecy.” To top it off, Warren says on page 300 of his book, “Shift from local thinking to global thinking. God is a global God.”

Sadly, what is missing from Warren’s book is the message of contrition and true repentance, and that God will smite the world with judgement. Warren is a religious businessman and showman and reminds me of Phineas T. Barnum of circus fame. It was Barnum who supposedly said, “There is a sucker born every minute.” I feel so urged by the Holy Ghost to warn churches and pastors across this nation and overseas to stay in the Word of God. Do not be duped and driven by deceptive forces. Be led by the Spirit of God.

in response to your article. i am not sure if you agree with this article or if you are simply placing a different perspective to debate. Personally, anything that spreads the message of the gospel the Jesus Christ intended it, should suffice.

There are many jealous Christians who take on what others are doing for Christ and twist it into a 'devil thing'. Here's something to think about, i've said it before here on royouth, - If you look from pg.1 to the last page of the Bible, you never see demons bickering and argueing with one another, but you always see Christians!, why? because putting jealousy, hate, envy, etc. into believers is the devil's oldest trick in the book.

If you read 1 Corinthians 9:22 you notice that Paul didnt go into his missions as a Bible thumping radical. He went with a message of sending the message in the way that was best suited for that audience to hear it!I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
In today's modern mass media driven society, Rick Warren's book has surpassed all expectations as far as a 'Christian' book is concerned. Praise God for using Pastor Warren to spread the gospel. That is what the book is all about.

A Little History about Rick Warren and Saddleback. That is so awesome that Rick Warren teaches his church what the Bible teaches. To tithe. Saddleback is a church that had its humble beginnings and now has grown into a congregation of 10's of thousands. If you read 'The Purpose Driven Chuch' ... you'll see that Rick Warren placed before God to plant a church in an area that was known for great Churches (southern California) ... but God spoke to him to not seek 'transfer members' but to actually seek those that others wouldnt reach. isnt this something that the Bible teaches?

As far as money is concerned - Did you know that with all of those millions of dollars mentioned, 90% of the profits from the 'Puropse Driven 'Brand' is given to charity? homeless, sick, abandones, poor, etc.? As far as the $90 million budget is concerned. PRAISE GOD! A large complex with probably hundreds employed by Saddleback, which in turns provides a living for many families, need a payroll and finances to pay for all of the building costs, salaries, events, missionary work, crusades, charity donations, etc. You need money in this world in order to pay for different channels of spreading the gospel. No TV executive will say, 'here is a half hour spot on major markets for free...' That TV company needs money in order to run.

I could go on and on about the money issue, but it sickens me to see envious, jealous Christians who take bits and pieces from a ministry and twist it into their agenda.

No, the purpose Driven brand is not a replacement for the Bible. It is a message to go the real source, God's Word (which is mentioned in EVERY chapter of the Purpose Driven book)... that is where the message is...

I agree with Cosmin. You are taking the book out of context and twisting Rick Warren's words in the book to make it sound as you desire. I recognize the quotes you gave because I read the book and if you had given more of what he said before and after the SINGLE sentences you gave, then your accusations would be false. For instance, you quoted the part about how he states we should be happy there are so many different versions of the Bible...and he is really saying there is confusion?? What are earth makes you think that? He was merely pointing out the huge source of information we have today. From KJV, NKJV, NIV, and so forth. How is that bad? Yes, some translations are more accurate than others, but Mr. Warren was not stating that God's Word is confusing. Secondly, the 'limitations' Warren mentions about the Bible is NOT denouncing that there is no true word of God. But like all translations, something is lost from its original version. It is like translating a song from Romanian to English....the message is delivered but it isn't quite the same.

Then you went onto say, "Page 63: “The moment you were born into the world, God was there as an unseen witness, smiling at your birth.” How about Hitler and Stalin, Mr. Warren? On page 104 we read, “Try praising God without using the words ‘praise, hallelujah, thanks, or amen.’” He says to substitute other words. " Dude, what you wrote makes no sense. You are trying to put things together to glue to your tasting to get the effect you desire. Then you go onto say he is helping bring Satan to our lives?? Did you even bother to watch Rich Warren bible class video on "The Purpose-Driven Life"?? My church did and I took this particular Bible study class. Warren says to use other sayings such as "Father, Jehovah, YHWEH" and so forth and put MORE EMPHASIS on the Lord's Sovergienty. Tell me how that is bad?

Lastly, if you think he seems to focus not on God's Word then why would he adovcate memorizing scripture?? He does indeed.

Anywho, I disagree with your thinking that it is satanic. I read your biography from your website and you once practiced witchcraft I see. Hmm, could it be since you came to Christ, your trying to find things in others that simply isn't there?? I don't know whether or not your other accusations are true...but you must look at the broader picture. Why did you renounce even the movie of "The Passion of the Christ"?? Yes, I would of liked there to be less focus on Jesus' death, but it brought Christ to many unbelievers and hopefully to repentance or a hunger to know Christ.

Your messages from your webpage are full of hate and bitterness. Your 'ministry' needs to have more newsletters pertaining to biblical teaching instead of pointing fingers at everything around you. Furthermore, I think Christians know very well that Warren's book is to be used as a supplement, not a replacement for the Bible.

To say Satan is at the bottom of all these things is a bit farfetched. Satan's goal is to distract us from choosing the Lord as our Savior. All we have to do is accept Him. Any of the above "gimmicks" have helped people accept Him. Whether they are perfect in their doctrine is a different story. No one needs a perfect doctrinal understanding to get into heaven.
The church features psychedelic rock concerts with music that would rival Jimi Hendrix, “K.I.S.S.”, and the “Grateful Dead.”I've played pieces on my electric cello that went that way. The style of music is the medium across which the message makes it to teenagers' ears.
So God has blessed him. I smell jealousy.
For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was DRIVEN of the devil into the wilderness.”If these passages are not taken out of context, I don't know what is. People can be driven by anything. In Luke 4:1, to be led by the Spirit means to be driven by it. The words are synonymous.
I must also point out that Mr. Warren does not seem to like the Authorized King James Bible, and you will be hard-pressed to find a verse from the KJV in his book. The KJV is incomprehensible to much of today's English-speaking population.
Page 63: “The moment you were born into the world, God was there as an unseen witness, smiling at your birth.” How about Hitler and Stalin, Mr. Warren?Hitler and Stalin were not born devils. They were corrupted by the devil.

I could go on and really nitpick at this article, but it is so full of errors, I thought I could just pick at a few of its main points for a successful counterargument.

2 things to remember...

1. 2 Peter 2:3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

and

2. Philippians 1:15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill...... 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

I have learned not to be such a "hater" towards false pastors and prophets like benny hinn and kenneth copeland and joel olsteen, rather, as long as Christ is preached, their 'rewards' will be their riches here on earth and because they are preaching, People Get saved (not because of them, but because the Gospel message is powerful and Spiritual)

Matthew 6:2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

Matthew 6:5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

Matthew 6:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

their "reward" Jesus was speaking about, was the "praises from men".... Thats their reward.

Whether rick warren is a false man or not, who cares. Preach the Gospel. :bfro:
